Music and Me
Music has always played an important part in my life. It helps me make sense of the world and I find it a great comfort to think about the world through song.
I tend to write more songs than I musically arrange. I often write them as poems first and then decide whether they'll work with a tune or not. My library of self-penned songs is pretty vast and I only share an incredibly small snippet of them on my debut EP - All is Still. I like to write and perform songs of social comment and of a political nature. Sometimes I write them so that they are purposefully uncomfortable, other times I let subtlety take over. All is Still has a selection of songs that represent this. A number of my songs criticize The Government, particularly in the field of education. I have also written a number of songs about human rights and humanity in general. I'm also working on developing my knowledge of traditional folk songs and working out how to incorporate these ideas into my own work. A number of my songs have a historical-educational lens to them, this is partly due to my day job as and educational historian and educational philosopher (you can follow 'academic me' on twitter: @lewis_stockwell). I also spend some time re-arranging traditional songs and putting my own twist on them, too. I'm currently spending time building my portfolio of performances and I plan on staying as an Independent Artist for the foreseeable future. I would like to think that my quality of music is comparable to that of music produced under a label and I feel it shows that folk music can stay very much a live without the eery invisible hand of the musical market stepping in and dictating what can and cannot be done. Thanks for taking the time to check out the website and best wishes to you. |
